When looking each other in the eye, human beings change radically their mode of communication: through this shared gaze, they seek out the other’s intent and consequently open up the space of the imaginary and of fantasy where vision in the animal world remains a search for clues: this is the argument of the book Eye to Eye, and the essential of this reply to Gérard Bonnet.

Gérard Bonnet : the eye or the gaze ? regarding some recent writing on the question of the gaze
The author analyzes several articles and books devoted to the central role of the gaze in human relations for some time. He points out the principle teachings and regrets the lack of cooperation and exchange which characterize these, when they concern a particularly burning subject. This is doubtless due to the fact J. Lacan’s contributions about the distinction between the eye and the gaze are not sufficiently taken into account.
Sophie de Mijolla-Mellor : the seducer as ferryman
Within the interplay of sexes and generations, the seducer is above all a “ ferryman ” enabling the adolescent girl who embarks with him to find again both the multiple harmonies of her polymorphic infantile sexuality and an incestuous dream. This passage is a re-crossing of time and of a socially regulated evolution towards the status of woman and mother ; it will make a little girl of her again. It is passage also in the sense of a fantasy transgression which is possible only if it has not already happened earlier in reality. For incest is not the Œdipus complex but rather crushing of it, as dream and reality collide.
Houari Maïdi : the beautiful, the ugly, and gender
Narcissistic, homoerotic, even “ feminine ”, the adolescent is passionately attracted to the beautiful, by the beauty of the image of the body, and all that involves the perception of an ideal bodily representation, i.e. a fantasy image, is coveted and wished of oneself. However, if homoerotism is inherent in narcissistic puberty, homosexuality, as gender and as “ structured ” inclination of the sexual life, appears to be related to the infantile archaic and in particular to find its essence in the fundamental aesthetic meeting of infancy.
Olivier Ouvry : the enigma of the feminine for the woman
Through clinical examples, the author approaches the issue of the Feminine in women. The question of “ what is “the” woman ? ”, a classic with men, turns out to be shared by member both sexes, especially by women who are find themselves in a masculine subjective sexual position.
A parallel between the four positions defined by the crossing of the two sexual subjective positions with the two anatomical sexes, and the four discourses defined by J. Lacan is attempted at the end of the article to show how nothing can be said about the position of the woman.
Claude Savinaud : the “ rock of femininity ” as a stumbling block for adolescent sexuality
Sexual abuse in the family setting of some adolescent authors seems to demonstrate a problem in distinguishing what there is of femininity in the maternal object. Here we try to study this factor specifically :
– The act corresponds to a “ release ” of the protection ensured by the maternal imago and/or a higher bid to appropriate the adolescent’s body or mind as an enjoying or distressing object.
– The act responds to a hole in symbolic ideas defined by the law, this hole concerns the “ biological rock ” of castration, of which sexual difference is a calling signal.
Brigitte Haie : creation in the adolescent girl: ascribing sublimation to the register of fantasy
This article aims to bring into light the function of sublimation as a creation in order to overcome the impossibility of sexual intercourse in the adolescent girl. The approach is twofold : on the one hand, we have revisited this concept in the light of Freudian theory as well as the Lacanian contribution to this field ; on the other hand we have tried to grasp its link to and divergences from fantasy.
Gisèle Chaboudez : the logical phase of adolescence
Now that there exists in psychoanalysis a logic that can identify the phase of the formation of a subject, like that of a neurosis, we can confirm that adolescence is a decisive logical phase. A time of the retroactive hold of fantasy, it is also the time of the discovery of orgasm, which constitutes what J. Lacan calls a maturation of the object a. The sexual relation discovers its non-conjunction in the man and the woman, whose effect is one of castration for both partners, repeating the symbolic castration that is the outcome of the Œdipus complex.
Serge Lesourd : the feminine in adolescence : the making of a place
Based on the results of an adolescent girl’s treatment, the author discusses a major discovery made at the time of adolescence, i.e. the discovery of femininity as such, unknown until then to the subject, whether boy or girl. This “ femininity as such ” is construed by the subject as separate from the sexual being he considered himself as a child. Sexuality rests on phallic primacy which limits relations with others. At puberty, the adolescent will refuse this phallic primacy as a regulating agent of ifs relationship with the outside world, as a limit to sexuality, as a boundary to enjoyment. This “ beyond ” of the phallic dimension, femininity as such, which is a type of enjoyment not fully marked by the phallic limit, must pass through unconscious logic, to allow the emergence of an heterosexual love relationship. The encounter with THE difference, one which embodies all differences, is difficult for adolescents. This detour through femininity, which is a necessary disruption, can also be the cause of serious social and psychic disruptions in adolescents.
Philippe Gutton : the pubertaire savant
The construction of identity is mobile and present ; it has the important quality of being sexual. First of all, the phallic infantile, then, at puberty major readjustments take place because of the experience of the pubertaire. The author describes this “ metamorphosis ” in a number of works which are recalled and brought together here. He now emphasizes on the organization that constitutes the other: what other ? The unconscious of the other in romantic seduction.
