Luc-Henry Choquet : the influx of delinquent minors and its consequences for education

An examination of the influx of delinquent minors highlights the major trends resulting from the activities of different services concurrent with an increasing penal response. But above all, the results of this examination illustrate the growing diversity of types of delinquency and of juridical and institutional paths that may be taken. The most common case is that of delinquent minors who go through the judicial system once and do not re-offend. On the contrary, cases of delinquent minors who commit the most serious crimes or are « repeat offenders » are more rare. All these cases call for specific treatments carried out in accordance with the characteristics of the minors in question and the underlying psychological dynamic of the actions and their consequences.

Confinement of children in all its forms does not go without saying. Yves Morhain : the paradox of the « confinement » of adolescent et young adult murderers : between destructiveness and creativity

Today’s delinquency, characterized by aggression against the other, the counterpart, which is often sudden, indeed, an immediate, destructive explosion, belongs to the archaic which has to do with the subjective existence of the subject. Judicial approaches offer forms of social re-education and prevention, focused on the transgressive, disorganizing act rather than on the potential for starting over, lead to the « confinement » of these problematic adolescents and young adults, reproducing a stigmatization of the troublemakers within prison walls.
In what turns out to be an impasse, « confinement » can carry out and induce the dynamic of a passage, by establishing frameworks for therapeutic mediation which involve the violent adolescent in a work of psychical re-elaboration and in a relaunching of his subjective dynamic. This opens the way to constructive and creative drive satisfactions which are not just a place of release for these adolescents. These transformative spaces can lead to symbolization and put these youths back into a network of intersubjectivity, a community of exchanges enabling them to turns towards a space of possibilities.

Jacques Jayan : confinement of delinquent minors

The confinement of minors is the starkest image of punishment, and for minors the most damaging in terms of mental health, development and recidivism. Can modifications undertaken in penal institutions for minors reduce the affiliating and stigmatizing effects of incarceration ? Do the educative detention centers that have been constructed offer a favorable outlook for a pedagogical undertaking ? Can this be envisioned without taking into consideration the psychical dimension of the anti-social act ? We will examine these questions in this article after an examination of the supposed etiology of delinquency.

Emmanuelle Böe, Karine Lestideau, Georges Papanicolaou, Tahra Moulay, Chantal Wernoth : escale ado, a true-false « maison des adolescents »

Escale Ado was created in 2010 by combining two units of the Clinique Dupré : the Relais and the CATTP, a reception center and a treatment center. The pluri-disciplinary approach that is offered, the inscription into a network of structures of both kinds, makes Escale Ado similar to the « Maisons des Adolescents » treatment centers. Using two clinical vignettes, we highlight the usefulness of placing an evaluation setting within a care-providing structure, the therapeutic perspectives that can be derived from this, such as the opening up of the two places to each other, and ways passing between them can enable us to offer customized treatment to adolescents and young adults.

Rahmeth Radjack, Agathe Benoit de Coignac, Gesine Sturm, Thierry Baubet, Marie Rose Moro : how to receive and treat unaccompanied minors from foreign countries ?

The problems relating to unaccompanied international minors we receive in the « Maisons des Adolescents » are complex. Studies about mental health of these young people are still few. Most of them must go through their identity construction period alone and have often experienced repeated trauma and multiple bereavements. It seems appropriate to receive these young people in a treatment setting, like the cross-cultural consultations, which enables the emergence of cultural representations and takes into account pre, per and post-migration experiences to restore the construction process of identity.

Laurence Manzano, Marie Rose Moro : make-up workshop

This article describes an original way of mediation that was used in a « Maison des Adolescents » : cosmetics. The workshop is lead by a professional socio-beautician together with a caregiver (nurse or educator) in a healthcare team. The beauty therapist evaluates every one of the adolescents’ requests and then offers them cosmetic procedures in line with what they wish, ask for or want to try. They thus learn to take care of themselves, of their desires, their beauty and their bodies. Everything that is experienced by the teenagers is then included in the therapeutic setting. This activity is very sought after by adolescents and causes great changes in the way that the teenagers view and represent themselves.

Martine Kagan, Eugénie de Mortemart, Maryline Bellieud-Vigouroux, Marie Rose Moro : world of mirrors

We will present here a therapeutic workshop that uses clothing as a means of mediation. This workshop, headed by an educator and a stylist working in a « Maison des Adolescents », enables work on the body image and its distortions, on self-esteem, on the body envelope and on adolescent body preoccupations. This workshop is both a place for meeting as well as sharing experiences on the subject of being and appearance.
