The « adolescent not for consumption » applies to a large number of adolescents struggling against parents who abuse their power by exploiting them to the point of denying their status as subject. Many of these adolescents succumb to self-destructive behaviors in order to spare their parents, the fundamental targets of their violence. Others escape this restriction and manage to preserve the process of subjectivation. They show that there can be solutions that might help keep the others from becoming consumable.
Whiteness is a form of resignation from the self, a wish to erase oneself from an existence which has become nothing more than a sort of heavy weight. Indifference to oneself leads to self-exposure to a danger that is no longer perceived as such, since the youngster no longer inhabits himself completely. It is an unconscious form of will, not so much to die as to not be here anymore. It attests to the impossibility of being an individual and of investing oneself as the subject of one’s own existence. Whitening techniques are so many attempts to get rid of oneself in order not to have to put up with the pressures of an unbearable identity.
The aim of this article is to try to draw a connection between the relative banality of the control fantasy illustrated by the myth of Pygmalion and the madness of the pedophilic predator captivated by the minimal lines he sketches at the passage of certain pre-adolescent girls. He will give himself a right, sometimes unlimited, to this object who incarnates his fantasy ; but the girl he picks has no other reality for him beyond the appearance he gives to her. She becomes a living fetish that he will model as he wishes and whose principle function is to enable him to go on ignoring his hatred of women and his insurmountable rivalry with the mother who, unlike himself, can bring children into the world.
This text brings together several different perspectives : the aesthetic issue of the bond between creator and his work, the psycho-sociological and historical issue of the generational norm in the romantic relationship, and above all the psychopathological, ethical and legal issue of the pedophilic seducer. Adolescence, 2008, T. 26, n°4, pp. 817-840.
From Pierre Male to Philippe Gutton, the specific nature of the work of adolescence has been affirmed, producing great developments in contemporary perspectives of psychoanalysis, not without some effect on the latter. Metapsychological renewals have been set up to give an account of the diversity of the clinical treatment of adolescence. This is always primarily a matter of the young adolescent’s confrontation with the pubertary genital. The traumatic effect of this emergence, in an initial break with the latency period and with the phallic narcissistic infantile genital organization, determines modes of defense which may be of an archaic type in relation with primary flaws in the psychical organization. The impact of puberty reveals these by re-actualizing them, and adolescence as a psychical work determines their outcome. The psychotherapy of adolescence retains the essential part of the psychoanalytical method, association of ideas, but this is fed by the therapist in order to foster a putting into representation and into words. The analyst’s psychical availability and plasticity of identification helps him to find, in his own style, the right tone and the proper distance.
The psychoanalysis of a severely ill 17 year-old adolescent boy illustrates some characteristics of the treatment after a developmental breakdown. I insist on the necessary (re)construction of the fantasies that were « blanked » by the traumatic enactments, as well as on the unavoidable psychotic transference.
activity. the conceptual path of françois ladame
The conceptual approach proposed by François Ladame highlights the original notion of a « protective shield for the inside » whose internalization, during the second phase of separation-individuation, is one of the major issues of the adolescent phase. We must therefore show how the roles and functions of the Subconscious, the dream-work and the « protective shields for the inside »intermingle in order to achieve the development of the sexually differentiated body. All these interrelations and interweavings also rehabilitate the role of the Ego which must find compromises capable of integrating the new reality principle tied to the emergence of genitality and tolerating the presence of incestuous and parricidal fantasies that have been kept alive, bearing in mind that incest is at the heart of adolescence. For F. Ladame, this leads to the central idea that the true innovation, or even revolution, in adolescence, rests in the possibility of tolerating the exclusion of the primal scene, while keeping alive the representation of the relationship between the parental couple.
